Explore the golden state

LITTLE Passports, the award-winning children’s media brand, and Visit California have joined forces to create memorable and exciting adventures that celebrate the state of #California.

Through this new partnership, Little Passports developed printable activities and interactive online content, including a dynamic California map for curious kids and adults looking to learn more. The content, available on littlepassports.com/visit-california, includes educational information about the Golden State, fun games and puzzles, all designed to inspire exploration.

In February, Visit California launched its family campaign, “Kidifornia” – where kids rule, and encouraged kids to bring their parents along for the trip of a lifetime. A growing number of bucket list-worthy theme parks, museums, national and state parks, and beaches make Kidifornia the perfect location for any type of family vacation.

Additional pillars of the partnership will be announced later this year, including a sweepstakes to win an all-inclusive family trip to California. Little Passports activities will also be available in California Welcome Centers.

Breaking the ice in Denmark

THE Winter swimmers, the "Icebreakers" (Isbryderne), hosts the yearly Skagen Winter Swimming Festival, which next year takes place the 25th-28th of January 2018. The event is organized in cooperation with the local Tourist Board Turisthus Nord.

The Skagen Winter Swimming Festival welcomes all true Vikings and guarantees ice cold sea dips, hot drinks, a close encounter with the unique nature of Skagen and a varied program.

Each morning starts of course with a morning sea swim for all participants at "Sønderstrand" near "Grenen".

The Winter Weather in Skagen is raw and gritty, and the winter swimmers therefore put their courage to the test when they meet the ice cold wind and waves. But the atmosphere is fantastic and invigorating! After the cold swim hot soup is served by Jacob's Café.

Smoking ban on Thai beaches

#THAILAND is imposing a smoking ban on some 20 popular #beaches across the country as part of the country’s sustainable tourism plan efforts. The ban comes into effect in November 2017.

While the #smokingban covers the beaches themselves, officials say there will be designated smoking areas provided inland with refuse containers for the disposal of cigarette butts. Cigarette butts, apparently, are the main reason behind the new smoking ban on Thai beaches.

Thailand’s Department of Marine And Coastal Resources says it has had to retrieve tens of thousands of butts from the sands of beaches, with this accounting for a large amount of all rubbish collected. A department official said up to 138,000 butts had been collected from just one particular beach – a 2.5 km stretch of Phuket’s popular Patong Beach.

Come November, the new smoking ban on Thai beaches that has been making Thai tourism news recently will carry a fine of up to 100,000 Baht or a year in prison. Far better, it will be, to head to the designated smoking areas for a cigarette.

Take a break in a tiny home on the Isle of Wight

NOW open for business, Tiny Homes Holidays is a new, ethical way to take a break on the Isle of Wight.

The Tiny Homes Holiday concept is all about downsizing your space and upsizing your free time – and living simply in a smallholding environment. It has been created by the people behind Vintage Vacations, the first Airstream caravan holidays in the UK. Like Airstreams, the tiny house movement originated in the US, among people choosing to downsize and live more simply. And the same ethos applies on the Isle of Wight site.

The three architect-designed Tiny Homes – Eilidh, Hygge and Silva – are set in a smallholding environment adjacent to the Parkhurst Forest, with walking trails, cycle routes and wildlife galore, including the Isle of Wight’s famous red squirrels. Tranquil coastlines and the coastal town of Cowes are a cycle ride away.  The development incorporates many eco-friendly measures, including solar power, composting toilets, wood burning stoves and water recycling.

72 Hours in Koh Samui

LOCATED off the eastern coast in the Gulf of #Thailand, Koh Samui is an #island filled with dazzling palm-fringed beaches with plenty to do and see. The vocal local team at OZO Chaweng Samui believe that 72 hours is just right to cover the best attractions, enjoy delicious cuisine and go on an adventure.

The first 24 hours

Explore the island’s spiritual side at three Buddhist sites – Marvel at the famous stunning golden 12-metre-tall Big Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai, which is visible from your window seat even before you land. Nearby is Wat Plai Laem, offering a glimpse into Thai-Chinese culture and featuring an eye-catching 18-armed Chinese goddess statue. For more insight into Buddhist culture, head to see the mummified monk in a seated meditative pose at Wat Khunaram, a reminder of the natural life cycle.

Unique natural rock formations on the rocky coastline – The iconic Hin Ta and Hin Yai were sculpted by the natural elements over years and resemble the male and female forms. Legend has it that an old couple were travelling with their son to propose to a girl in a neighbouring province. A storm seized their boat and they were unable to survive but turned into rocks as proof to the would-be bride of their true intentions.

An evening well spent at the Fisherman’s Village – Once home to an actual fishing community, the village has been transformed with rustic-style shop-houses housing trendy beachside dining spots and boutiques – but its old-world charm still remains. Before the sun sets, grab seats at CAFE De PIER X Samui and gaze out at the remarkable view of the broken down pier reminiscent of olden years, with the backdrop of the magic hour sky.

The next 24 hours

A day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park – Over 40 jagged islands poke through azure seas featuring limestone massifs, tropical rainforests, deserted coves, caves, hidden lagoons and plenty of wildlife. Day trippers are spoilt for choice with lots to do. Underwater-lovers will enjoy swimming with shoals of marine creatures. Explorers with adventurous hearts will get an adrenaline rush from challenging hikes to the striking viewpoints. Those who prefer to stay dry may kayak between the islands, or sunbathe on one of the many white-sand beaches.

An unforgettable last 24 hours

A delicious journey for foodies – Take a piece of Thailand back home with a Thai cooking lesson at Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts. The twice-daily three-hour classes start with the preparation of hand-made curry pastes followed by three local dishes. Visitors may also sample the 100% home-grown Magic Alambic rum crafted at the island’s only distillery, K&S Rum, which is worth a visit.

The sweetness of doing nothing – Thanks to OZO Chaweng Samui’s beachfront location, a lazy day can be spent sinking into plush loungers under the shade of coconut palm trees, soaking up the sea views and listening to the rolling waves.

Take Koh Samui home – Get rid of any spare Thai baht with coconut souvenirs as Koh Samui is known to produce the best coconuts in Thailand. The Kalamare, a local gelatinous coconut caramel candy made of coconut milk, sticky rice and palm sugar, is a must.

Take a ride in NYC

NEW York City offers carousels in all five boroughs—each with a different spin on the ride. From the aquatic-themed SeaGlass Carousel at Battery Park, to the Bug Carousel at the Bronx Zoo, endless family fun awaits this fall in NYC.

BROOKYLN

Jane’s Carousel; Brooklyn Bridge Park, DUMBO: No child’s visit to DUMBO would be complete without a visit to Jane’s Carousel, in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This 1922 merry-go-round was moved from Ohio, painstakingly restored and added to the neighborhood landscape in 2011. Its 48 horses prance near the East River year-round, protected from the elements by a jewel-box structure designed by architect Jean Nouvel. Rides are just US$2. –

Prospect Park Carousel; Prospect Park: This carousel has resided in Prospect Park since 1952, after being hand-carved in 1912, and first assembled in Coney Island. Riders can choose from 53 different horses, as well as a lion, a giraffe, a deer and a dragon-pulled chariot—each crafted with expressive faces and detailed bodies. One of the world’s only wheelchair-accessible carousels, it can also be rented out for birthday parties. –

B&B Carousell; Luna Park; Coney Island: First built in 1906 and a fixture of Brooklyn amusement park culture dating to the 1930s, the B&B Carousell has the power to transport riders back to simpler times. Painstakingly restored to its original charm and beauty as the last of the great Coney Island carousels, this magical amusement is the centerpiece of the Steeplechase Plaza and a signature ride at Luna Park.

BRONX

Bug Carousel; Bronx Zoo: Our favorite insects are all here — a long-legged praying mantis, a bright green grasshopper, even a dung beetle. A spin on the carousel is a great stop in the middle of the park. Open year-round.

MANHATTAN

Friedsam Memorial Carousel; Central Park, Midtown: Located in the center of Central Park, near 64th Street, this famous, historic carousel is ridden by nearly 250,000 people each year. The current ride, which features more than 57 horses, is actually the fourth carousel to inhabit the space, since the first one (which was powered by a real horse!) was retired in 1924 and the next two were destroyed by fires. Created by Brooklyn’s own firm Stein & Goldstein in 1908, the current carousel is a favorite for birthday parties and special children’s events. –

Le Carrousel; Bryant Park, Midtown: Le Carrousel in Bryant Park, specially created to complement the park’s French classical style, is a homage to both European and American carousel traditions. Its 14 delightful animals, replicas of classical carousel creatures, revolve to the sounds of French cabaret music. The rounding boards, inspired by Bryant Park’s elegant barouque-stylet orchères along 40th Street, blend into the leafy canopy of the park’s London Plane trees.

Pier 62 Carousel; Hudson River Park, Chelsea: Take a ride on Hudson River Park’s custom-designed Hudson River Animals carousel. This signature 36 ft carousel has been created using 33 hand-carved wood figures of Hudson River Valley animals and one chariot, allowing for up to 36 passengers, per ride. The carousel building has been designed with a green roof and opens out to a large sprawling lawn and tree-lined pathways.

SeaGlass Carousel; Battery Park, The Battery: This new addition to The Battery Conservancy aims to entertain, inspire and educate adults and children alike. Built to recall 1896, when the Battery was home to the famous, since-closed New York Aquarium at the Castle, the carousel will showcase magical sea and fish creatures that are also available for sponsorship. Sixty SmartGlass panels will transform the carousel’s walls from clear to blue, simulating a realistic trip to the ocean’s floor.

QUEENS

Forest Park Carousel; Forest Park: Nestled within the 544 acres of Forest Park is the crown jewel of Queens: The Forest Park Carousel. Carved in 1903 by Daniel Carl Muller, it is a rare work of art and has been an anchor of the park since 1973.

Flushing Meadows Carousel; Flushing Meadows-Corona Park: Anchored by the historic Flushing Meadows Carousel, our park features an incredible mix of rides and attractions for kids of all ages.

STATEN ISLAND

The Carousel for All Children; Willowbrook Park: The Carousel For All Children in Willowbrook Park is a turn-of-the-century Victorian style merry-go-round that opened in 1999. The carousel boasts 51 carved wooden figures of mythical beasts, endangered species and traditional carousel horses. It also showcases twenty hand-painted renderings of Staten Island landmarks, past and present. The Carousel For All Children is maintained by the Greenbelt Conservancy.

QTA and Qatar Airways extend ‘free’ Stopover in Qatar offer

QATAR
Tourism Authority (QTA) and Qatar Airways have announced that they will continue offering their attractive stopover package until the end of the year, following the excellent results from phase one.

The enticing offer - part of a broader +Qatar campaign - encourages all transit passengers to add #Qatar to their travel plans and provides transit passengers with an opportunity to discover the country. The offer includes free luxury hotel stays and complimentary transit visas. Initially planned to run from May until the end of the summer, the offer will now continue until 31 December. During the initial period, the country welcomed 34% more transit passengers compared to the same period in 2016.

QTA and Qatar Airways further announced that the offer will now be extended to passengers booking their travel through tour operators, allowing more people to benefit from the offer of a free overnight stay in a luxury hotel or a two-night stay for the discounted price of USD 100. In addition to the hotel accommodation, QTA and Qatar Airways are offering a free stopover city tour, which can be booked on arrival at Hamad International Airport.

Passengers can select from hotels including The Four Seasons, Marriott Marquis, Radisson Blu and Oryx Rotana. The city tours, organised by Discover Qatar, will offer passengers the opportunity to explore Doha and experience desert safari adventures or a dinner cruise aboard a traditional dhow, giving visitors a taste of Qatar’s authentic hospitality.

To be eligible for this offer, passengers simply need to book their flight on www.qatarairways.com, select ‘multi-city’ and choose their hotel once they receive their flight confirmation. This ground-breaking offer is available for all Qatar Airways passengers, both Premium and Economy, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to its brand ethos of ‘Going Places Together’. To maximise their time in Qatar, visitors can explore additional stopover packages offered by Discover Qatar.

100% baggage tracking at Istanbul New Airport

SITA is to provide 100 percent baggage tracking at Istanbul New Airport, its innovative baggage tracking solution at what will be one of the world’s largest airports, will allow airlines to meet IATA Resolution 753’s baggage tracking requirements from day one.

The airport, due to open in 2018, will have capacity to accommodate 90 million passengers a year. Upon completion of all four phases, the passenger capacity will reach over 200 million passengers annually and will be required to track more than 75,000 bags an hour.

The potential for bags to be mishandled in such a busy environment will be significantly reduced with SITA’s baggage solution by providing information on where every single bag is on its route through the airport.

Verdant vineyards from the sky

ONE of the Hunter Valley’s most popular resort properties, Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, is commemorating a very special milestone in style this month, by taking to the skies over the renowned wine region. The sprawling 25-acre Resort is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the launch of its very own hot air balloon, which is flying high to mark the occasion.

In partnership with Balloon Aloft, the branded Oaks Hotels & Resorts balloon recently made its debut at the annual Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta, where a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured balloons floated above the Hunter at sunrise, creating a sky-high spectacle for all to see. Following on from the four-day event, the Oaks balloon will now become a permanent addition to Balloon Aloft’s fleet over the next five years, offering Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort guests and other travellers the chance to experience the magic of hot air ballooning for themselves.
