Malta joins fight to keep jellyfish out

A NET to keep out jellyfish has been installed in Pretty Bay, Birzebbuga, in the first trial of its kind in #Malta.

The net covers an area of 747 sq. yards, with each side measuring 82ft and reaching a depth of eight feet.

It has been installed by the Physical Oceanography Unit of the University of Malta, in conjunction with the four-nation Med-Jellyrisk project, the first-ever international attempt (led by Italy, Malta, Spain, and Tunisia) to assess the socio-economic impacts of jellyfish proliferation and implement counter-measures.

Similar nets have been installed on Elba, Lipari, and Lampedusa.

Every summer, two million bathers are stung by jellyfish.
