LAST year’s closure of the mainline railway linking Devon and Cornwall in England could have cost the UK economy from £60 million to £1.2 billion, says the Devon Maritime Forum (DMF).
Train services to Cornwall – one of Britain’s main holiday regions – were stopped after tracks were washed into the sea at Dawlish in early 2014 during severe storms. The forum said all industries were hit by the destruction of the line.
The track was re-opened in April at a cost of £35 million.
