Best holiday county destination

 right, is Kielder Castle which was built in 1775 as a hunting lodge and country retreat for the Dukes of Northumberland and is now a visitor centre for Kielder Forest.

Best coastal resort

1 Bournemouth

2 Tenby - left is St Catherine's Fort which is just offshore from Tenby Castle. Built on St Catherine's Island with work beginning in 1867 and completing in 1870 but the guns and shields were not installed until 1886. Decommissioned in 1907 and then sold and converted it into a private house. During World War II the fort was compulsory purchased and an anti-aircraft battery was built in front of the fort. After the war the fort was again decommissioned and sold back into private hands and opened in 1968 as a zoo, when the zoo relocated a decade later it was left empty - however work is ongoing to restore the fort and some of it is open to the public.
