RESEARCH commissioned by the Nationwide Building Society has revealed alarming news about the number of British holidaymakers who are willing to travel to Europe without insurance.
More than one-in-five respondents to the survey said they wouldn’t take out travel insurance for a one or two-week holiday in Europe. For a European weekend get-away, the figure rises to 41 percent.
A probable explanation is the fact that Britons visiting European Union countries without travel insurance are still entitled to free or reduced cost medical treatment if they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). But that card does not cover private medical expenses or the cost of being repatriated to the UK in the event of an emergency. It also offers no protection against the theft or loss of property, or the cost of a delayed return home.
