Have a holiday with Napoleon, but don’t mention la guerre!

NEXT year is the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, at which Napoleon Bonaparte’s dream of European domination were at last crushed by Wellington and his German allies.

Where better, then, for a self-catering holiday in 2015 than the island where Boney was born – Corsica – and where better to stay than in the house where he lodged in 1793 when, as a Lieutenant Colonel, he commanded a battalion of Corsican volunteers.

The 11th century house is in the centre of Bonifacio on the southern tip of Corsica. Its 70 stone steps lead up from the lobby (there’s no lift) to Apartment Napoleon, which has one double bedroom and its own roof terrace offering harbour and sea views.

The apartment is one of the highlights Simpson Travel’s -
www.simpsontravel.com - new collection of villas, country houses, and apartments in Greece, Corsica, Turkey, and Majorca. Others include a 16th century palazzo in the Corsican mountains and, for people who want to very, very far away from it all, a cottage on Anti Paxos in the Ionian Sea. The four square-mile island has: a population that fluctuates between 30 and 100, no proper roads; four tavernas; and no shops. You get there by flying to Corfu, then a ferry to Paxos, then a boat to Anti Paxos.

Graham Simpson, chairman of Simpson Travel, says: 'As each year passes, properties with genuine character and unique appeal become harder to find., so we are especially pleased that this collection is not only our most comprehensive, it is also our most original. We are renowned for our 'road less travelled' approach to creating holidays. Our 2015 programme exemplifies this approach.’

The company has increased its British Airways charter service, with flights exclusively chartered by Simpson to Corfu, Dalaman in Turkey, and Figari in Southern Corsica.
