TUI’s manifesto for tourism

TUI TRAVEL has submitted a manifesto to Britain’s political parties outlining ways it can support the travel and tourism industries.
The company has stressed that areas such as competition, infrastructure, and sustainability are key.
It has outlined a need to review potential barriers to tourism growth such as Air Passenger Duty and training, while also asking for a level playing field between air traffic and other transport modes when it comes to cross-border checks.
Mike Bowers, group legal director at TUI Travel PLC said: ‘As the industry leader, it is important that we take an active role in helping to shape the future of travel and tourism. The UK is lagging behind in sustainable aviation and airport capacity. Our manifesto is aimed at ensuring customer safety, a fairer playing field for the industry to thrive, and a greater experience for all holidaymakers.’

Top 5 short haul markets by visits and spend


France remains the market generating by far the most visits with a shade more than 4 million in the year to March 2014.  Both Germany and Netherlands are firmly in positive territory over the past year and visits from Spain are starting to recover, with only Ireland among the top five in negative territory. When looking at the top five by spending Germany maintains top spot ahead of France.  With improving prospects Spain has moved up to third place ahead of Italy.

The USA remains by far the most sizeable long-haul market with more than 2.8 million visits, boosted by a 1% increase in volume over the past year.  Visits from Australia are again growing strongly with a healthy performance from India too, but Canada has seen a slight dip in the past year.  The top two markets by value are identical to those for volume, but thanks to very high spend per visit and recent strong growth, UAE is now up to third ahead of Canada.  China has seen robust growth in spend and is now very close to the £0.5bn mark.

Travel and tourism is the UK’s fifth largest industry. It supports 3.12 million jobs and accounts for nine percent of Gross Domestic Product.
