10 tips for Turkey

SUE FLYNN of holiday rental company www.kalkanmagic.com has these tips for making the most of your time – and money – when on a self-catering holiday in Turkey:

1. When booking a holiday property on-line, be sure to speak with the owner direct before committing to a booking; a quick telephone call is all it needs to ensure you are dealing with bona fide  owners.

2. Be friendly but confident when liaising with apartment and villa owners; you might be able to negotiate an earlier check-in time, a later check-out time or even an under-occupancy discount.

3. Ask for advice on favourite restaurants. Finding out for yourself is part of the pleasure of being on holiday, but if you can save time by using tried and tested establishments it can help you make the most of your time.

4. If you have small children, ask about the depth of the swimming pool, and ask if there is a shallow end. If you need cots and high chairs, ask if these can be provided.

5. If your property owner is booking your airport transfer, check the cost; it shouldn't be a profit making service.

6. Most properties have an information file detailing days out and things to do. Ask if the owner has a copy of this so you can read it before you go. This can be invaluable for planning your time.

7. It might be worth booking boat trips and other outings well in advance. The property owner might be able to do this on your behalf, but many are now on-line and can be booked easily, giving you one less thing to do when you are there.

8. When establishing your property's rent, check if this includes things such as air conditioning and WiFi.

9. Location is key to a successful holiday stay. If your chosen property is too far to walk or the roads are a bit rocky, you will need to factor in car hire or taxis to your overall holiday cost. Ask for the exact location and for walking distances, and if it is easily located in the dark.

10. Ask the owner whether it best to take currency or change it there. Also, ask where the best rates are given and how far that is from you villa or apartment.
