Brits get savvier on strong exchange rates

BRITISH holidaymakers are showing an increasing aptitude for sniffing out holiday destinations offering strong sterling exchange rates, according to the data from Post Office Travel Money. The data sees Brazil, Vietnam, and Hungary as some of the most popular destinations.

‘In a tough year for the travel industry,’ says a Post Office spokesperson, ‘it may be no coincidence that destinations which made the biggest currency sales gains during the summer have also seen a surge in sterling's value.

This suggests holidaymakers are becoming increasingly canny and doing their homework to see where exchange rates are favourable and living costs are low before booking.’

While the demand for Brazilian currency was heavily influenced by the FIFA World Cup, the strong pound was also identified as a factor behind a 215% increase compared to last year’s statistics.

Vietnamese currency sales were up 33%. Closer to home, demand for the Hungarian forint rose by 26% from last year’s June to August period. Croatia was also identified as an increasingly popular European holiday destination, with a 13% increase in demand for the Croatian kuna.
