Ryanair looks east

RYANAIR is looking at plans to offer cheap flights to the Middle East and Russia.

The airline said it would be “very keen” to expand in southern Europe amid speculation that it is considering buying Cyprus Airways. The company entered a non-binding expression of interest in Cyprus’ beleaguered flag carrier when it was put up for sale by the government following years of heavy losses.

Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, said he was responding in this way at the request of the Cyprus government, adding that the company had no desire to “rescue that barrel of rubbish”. Instead, it is believed the expression of interest has been made amid broader discussions to grant Ryanair a licence to offer low-cost flights from Cyprus to Tel Aviv, Beirut, and beyond.
