HOTEL staff, taxi drivers, and apparently
friendly locals are among those capable of tricking unsuspecting tourists,
according to travel company Justtheflight.co.uk.
Their survey of holiday scams
named Paris, Rome, and Barcelona as high risk cities for British tourists.
Common street scammers include
those pretending to offer a free product or service, such as a rose for your
partner, a music CD, or even an offer to take a photograph for you, but
aggressively demand payment afterwards.
In worse cases, these 'voluntary'
photographers will run off with your camera.
And then there are the taxi drivers who
offer drugs to a group of tourists on their way to a party; once the drugs are
accepted, fake police appear demanding that a large sum of money be paid to
avoid arrest.
Beware of shop staff in
Barcelona who appear to be on their phone while helping you; they might be taking
a photograph of your credit card details to be cloned later.
Some hotels in Europe
were found to be working with taxi drivers in order to convince tourists that
the hotel they have booked is closed for refurbishment. The driver then takes
passengers to a different, overpriced hotel.
