£1 million revamp for York Military Museum

Displays and audio visual experiences are set to give fresh insight into key regimental battles and individual stories of conflict at The York Army Museum following the award of a £1 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Home to some of the most important regimental collections in England, the museum will present military stories in modern and thought-provoking exhibitions including those that tell the very first story of action in the First World War. It will also display the earliest surviving British cavalry standard – The Dettingden Standard – dating from 1720-40.

This project will focus on the collections of the Royal Dragoon Guards and Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire, which reflect the roles of the cavalry and infantry in the north of England over the past 328 years.

The museum will re-open in August.
