THE Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth has won the Project
of the Year category at the Building Awards 2014.
‘The new Mary Rose Museum combines contemporary
architecture, sensitive preservation and a highly complex build process to
showcase one of the most ambitious conservation projects ever undertaken,’ said
the chairman of the main building contractor, Bouygues UK.
The Mary Rose – said to be Henry VIII’s favourite
warship – was built in Portsmouth in 1510 not far from its current location: No.3
Dock in Portsmouth’s Naval Base. The ship was sunk in the Battle of the Solent
against the French in 1545. Only 35 of more than 500 crew were known to have survived.
She was brought to the surface in 1982 after 400 years on the sea bed.
