‘Visitors travel through time as they walk through the hangars, taking in displays featuring the first planes and helicopters used by the Royal Navy and the advanced kit the armed services have now. There are interactive displays, allowing guests of all ages to get a feel of Navy life. There is the opportunity to explore a submarines, and test a periscope!
The museum has many events throughout the year, including the annual Air Day, usually held in July. A highlight in August last year was an event to celebrate 50 years of Dr Who. Daleks, K-9s, and various creatures from the television series wandered the halls, along with Dr Who’s from over the years offering to pose with the T.A.R.D.I.S.
A major attraction at Yeovilton is one the first British Concordes to fly … at 25mph per minute, getting jet-setters from London to New York in under three hours. You might be surprised at how small – almost cramped – the seating areas were. Passengers taller than 5’ 4” had to duck! Below this beauty is the Simulator, an enjoyable and cheap ride for anyone who wants to experience a helicopter flight without leaving the ground.
It’s not all about Britain, though. A Japanese Kamikaze exhibit includes copies of letters written by young men to their mothers, declaring their pride of being chosen by their country to fly to their certain death!
A Brush with War display is a powerful representation life during WW2, from the paintings by war artists to the sketches found in a POW’s autograph book.
From a bullet-ridden Sea King helicopter to the Korea exhibition, there is something humbling about taking in the history of the Royal Navy, and its involvement across the world.’
