HAS the fashion for green travel – and staycations – hit the
planet’s airlines? Doesn’t look like it. The International Air Transport
Association (IATA) announced full-year traffic results for 2013 showing a 5.2
percent increase in global passenger demand compared to 2012. The 2013
performance aligns with the average annual growth rate of the past 30 years.
Passenger traffic
growth at Europe’s airports in 2013 increased overall
by 2.8 percent compared
with 2012. While non-European Union countries such as Turkey, Russia, Iceland
and Norway reported passenger traffic growth of 9.6 percent, EU airports saw a modest increase of one percent,
with traffic showing signs of recovery in the last quarter.
